Station Wagon Bandwidth

"Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway."

Stationwagon Although this quote is attributed to Andrew Tanenbaum in 1996, many agree that it was said much earlier, perhaps with minor variations.  I'm pretty sure I remember it from the late '70s or early '80s, and as I remember it, the reference was to 9-track tapes.  Anybody else remember those?  Here's one older reference, and Wikipedia has additional info in their Sneakernet article.

Thinking about backups and bandwidth, I couldn't help but remember this old quote.  Seems it's still true, if you want to move "a lot" of stuff to a distant site, physical media still works!

Seems that Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, posted something similar about moving a petabyte of data a couple months ago.  He chose to use a sailboat for his example.
