Do You Know Anything About...
We're giving some serious consideration to some data management products. I'm looking for any comments, good or bad, about any of them. I'm wary of stepping into anything that no other church/ministry has used before, and at the same time, I realize this is some new territory. Can you help me out?
- BakBone NetVault. Alternative: why not stay with BackupExec?
- C2C Archive One. Alternative: The Barracuda Message Archiver
- Moonwalk. Alternatives: Arkivio, CaminoSoft, Enigma Data , SevenTen, probably others, all of whom I know even less about
- Data Domain. Alternatives: ExaGrid, SanMelody, and probably plenty of others. (Permabit added 5/9/2008)
If you have any horror stories, I'd sure rather hear them now.
I can personally vouch for BakBone. I used them about 3 years ago at my previous company and while the interface was not the prettiest (or even easiest) thing to use, the reliability of the software was amazing! The best part for us was that we had 40+ servers all to be backed up and our previous software (arcserve) had required a manual install and configuration on every single machine. Bakbone allowed us to install on one machine, then push the software to each server. All config is from one central console which is a real timesaver!
Also, their phone support was incredible. great customer service.

How much data are you looking to manage?

==> Mike, we're currently managing only about 5TB. However, when we bring all our Video archives online, we expect that to quickly jump to at least 30TB, possibly as much as 50TB, and it will only go up from there. So, judging from your web site (http://permabit.com/), it looks like we're currently below the lower-end of your target range.

Tony - We have 2 different product lines within our Permabit Enterprise Archive family: Business Series and Data Center Series. It sounds like the Business Series would be a good fit for you with plenty of room to grow. It starts at 8TB and can grow to 40TB of raw capacity. With our Scalable Data Reduction (SDR) technology, you can effectively store much more data than that into the system by leveraging data deduplication and compression, which are standard features of both product lines.
