The 10-Year Award

Dscn2157

During our staff lunch today, various members of the staff received their awards for 5 and 10 years of service.  Above are the five of us who received our TEN-year awards.  Left to Right: me, Herschel Hatcher, Cheryl Baker, Brent Weber, and Randy Schlichting.

For ten years of service, Perimeter awards a "time piece."  Most of us expected this to be a watch, but as you can see by that huge box in front of Randy Schlichting, there are other types of time pieces.  I haven't yet seen what was in that box, but hopefully it will be showing up on the WorshipWell blog some time.

BTW, if anyone remembers me recently mentioning my ELEVENTH anniversary and is confused, well...that makes sense.  We only do these awards once per year, covering all people who had their anniversary the previous year.  My early January anniversary just makes this seem all weird, but it all works out.

Welcome Ivey Thomas

Ivey Thomas is the most recent addition to Perimeter's IT Staff, joining us as our Data Quality Specialist.  Actually, Ivey's been around Perimeter for a while, in the membership department.  She's now part of our staff to help consolidate all "data" roles into our IT department.  As we're switching our staff to ProVision CRM, Ivey will play a key role in make sure we have, and maintain, very clean data in our database.  The software will help, but Ivey is the "difference maker" in the overall process.

OK, this isn't the best picture of Ivey, but it may be the most interesting.  Yes, that's a pink sweater.  And a pink phone, and a pink pen.  But, can you tell that her notebook is also pink?

Three Questions for Church IT Staff

Hoping for some interesting comments here.

1. Do you have any sort of internal blogs, available to church staff only?

2. Do you do any sort of internal Computer Based Training?

3. Do you do any sort of interactive testing that provides scores you can save in a database?

Deep Sharing of Budget Info?

Would any of you at churches of 1000+ Weekly Worship Attendance be willing to do some deep sharing of your budget details?  Not just IT budget, but full church budget (appropriately hiding specific details of salaries and such).  Perimeter's Director of Operations would like to have a dialog with a few other large churches.  Any takers?  Please comment here, or send me an email: tonyd {at} perimeter {dot} org.

Computer Literacy, Part 2

At the end of February, I did a post about "the new literacy" that generated a range of comments in response.  The discussion even continued on a couple of other blogs.  Because it's so easy to miss blog comments, let me highlight a few.

That's a lot of widely varied response on this topic.  Probably worth a bit more dialog here.

The New Literacy?

Persontech I'm stepping into a dangerous, probably controversial, area here, so I'm going to ask for some grace before you read on.

Consider a church staff, maybe 50 years ago.  Let's say an "engaging" church, a growing church, a progressive church.  Not a liberal church, but a church with great convictions and a desire for truth and relevancy in attempting to advance the gospel.  Sort of have that picture in mind?  OK, now consider the selection process to work at such a church.  The interview would likely address things like education, perhaps work ethics, probably some theological values, work experience, and so on.  Do you think the interview would address basic literacy?  More to the point, would a church from the 50s (or 60s, or 70s, or later) consider hiring a person to a staff position who couldn't read and write?  I doubt it, although I'm sure there are some very valid exceptions.

Fast forward to today.  Can you imagine hiring an illiterate person?  What about a computer-illiterate person?  Here's the thought I want to throw out.  Computer literacy today is the equivalent of basic literacy of the past.  Anyone without decent computer skills is going to be a handicap to a church.

Is that too strong a statement?  Am I being to harsh?  Please argue with me!

Staff Who Have Come and Gone

This is mostly a "just for me" post, a reminder of people who have been part of my life.

In reviewing my 10 years at Perimeter, I had an opportunity to look back on many of the people who have been here and those who have gone on elsewhere.  It's an amazing list.  The first thing I noticed is how the phone list itself has changed.  Somehow, I've managed to save most of the phone lists over the years.  Here's what it looked like just before I came on staff, somewhere in late 1996:
Pl1996

A new, full-page, phone list was created the day I started, 1/6/1997.  Here it is, compared with our phone list of today, almost exactly 10 years later:

Here's my best attempt at a complete list of those who have gone on to other things while I've been on staff.  (Some of these people are still involved in different ways, particularly as volunteers):

Raving Fan Service from the Perimeter Bookstore

Ravingfans If you've ever read Raving Fans (and if you haven't, you should!), you may remember the story about the customer wanting a book the store didn't have.  I won't give away the story, but the [obvious] answer is that the customer received such excellent service that he became a raving fan of the store.

Well, Luann Richardson and her excellent team at the Perimeter Church Bookstore recently gave me some rather amazing service.  But I have to give a little background first.

Background part 1:  I'm a huge fan of the TV Series House.  (It's about the only TV show I watch)  When I heard that the second season was about to be released, I let my wife know that I was interested and it would be a great, late, birthday present.

Background part 2: The Perimeter Bookstore routinely gives great service, but one bit of "above and beyond" they regularly do is to challenge the church staff.  Any time we're looking for a book, or CD, or DVD, or whatever else might come from one of their distributors, they ask for "first chance" to supply it.  Usually they can offer about the same price as Amazon, but without shipping charges -- I can simply walk into the bookstore and pick it up.

Background part 3: At the time I asked my wife about the DVD, Luann was pregnant.  Very pregnant.  An is any-day-now pregnant.  Keep in mind, the DVD hadn't been released yet, so Luann couldn't provide it even if she wanted to.

Now, back to the story.  You can probably see where this is going.  About the time the DVD became available, Luann became slightly distracted giving birth to a beautiful little girl, Tess.  Somehow, in that distraction, she failed to order the DVD.  (If you know Luann, you know that really is surprising, even though she was a bit busy)  It's also important to mention that my wife had let Luann know there was no hurry on this DVD.  I was interested in it, but I'd still be interested at Christmas, or our anniversary, or my next birthday, or whenever.  So not having the DVD the minute it was released didn't really matter.  Plus, she was ordering it as a surprise -- I didn't even know she'd ordered it.

Finally my wife explained the whole thing, and about a week ago, I casually mentioned it to Lee Jones, another amazing bookstore person.  Of course, he jumped right in to make sure House had been ordered, or if not, he'd order it, or somehow he'd take care of everything.  Now remember, there was NO urgency in this whatsoever, I had all the time in the world.  There was not any problem with the DVD not being instantly available.  There wouldn't have been any problem if the bookstore had told me they couldn't get it.  But...not the Perimeter Bookstore...a commitment made is a commitment fulfilled.  Lee made the order and I figured it would arrive a few days later.  All is fine.

Then Wednesday I received a very unusual voice mail from Luann!  She apologized profusely for the DVD being so late and said that she had it at home and would personally deliver it.  Besides there still being no urgency, I was trying to figure why she had the package at home.  She doesn't receive bookstore shipments at her house.  There's only one logical explanation -- Luann, with her new baby only a few days old, had gone to a local store and purchased it to fulfill her wonderful customer service expectations.

I was in an all-afternoon meeting Friday.  When I came back to my office, there was a package propped on the door handle.
Im000105a_1

A handwritten note was tucked in the handle:
Image0_1  "Tony,

This item was meant to be gift wrapped and hand delivered to you based on our customer service standards.

We hope that you enjoy this item and can forgive the lack of a personal greater, as we have delivered the parcel to you at a time when you were away from your desk.

     Sincerely,
     The Bookstore Management"

Image1 There was also a tag on the package indicating it was to me, from my wife, with hearts drawn on it.  (I can tell it's not really my wife's handwriting, but it's amazingly close!)

You know, Amazon can give pretty good service, but nothing will every rate as high as this little gift package.  Luann, Lee, Chrystie, and whoever else was involved in this little caper, you are AMAZING.

This actually turned into such a great story that I didn't even open the package yesterday.  I had to make sure I'd captured enough of the details to recount the whole experience.  I'm going to enjoy watching this.  Especially as I remember the story behind the story :-)

Pastor on Call - I survived

I've handed off the Pastor on Call duties.  What a relief!  It wasn't really so bad, and actually I feel privileged to have had the opportunity.  Interestingly, the only two calls I had were on subjects where I already knew something (somehow, I don't think that's just coincidence).  I won't share the details of the Pastor on Call discussions, but I'll gladly share links to two great resources:

For all kinds of interesting stuff about the brain, check out Amen Clinic.

For anything financial, from a biblical point of view, check out Crown Ministries.

Pastor on Call

Poc Today (why did I get 06/06/06?!) starts my 1-week duty as Pastor on Call.  Please pray for me!  From our Pastor on Call manual: "This position is designed to deal with specific 'crisis' situations when the age and stage pastor is not available."  That means *I* get the calls, or pages, if there's a death, or accident, or counseling situation, or anything else, and the most appropriate regular pastor-type isn't readily available.

I've never done this before, and frankly, I'm a bit scared by it.  At the same time, I know this is an important duty and I want to treat this as one of the most important things I'll do all year.  This is a great exercise in dependence and humility as there is no way I can do this on my own -- I must rely on God for everything.  This could be a very exciting week, although I'm secretly praying it will be one of the most boring times in the life of our church.
