Google Blog Search Rankings

Sometimes it's hard to figure how Google ranks things.  I noticed some interesting traffic to my blog from Google Blog search, so I checked it out.  Now this is very likely to change, but, at the moment, if you do a Google Blog search for

    "biggest loser"

my little blog comes up in the top few results!

Using MS-Word as a Blog Editor

I was just reading Cisco Ospina's post Blogging with Office 2007 and thought "no, it can't be that easy." Well, if this posts, then yes it is. Amazing! "Why didn't I think of that?"

Changes Coming in Google Analytics

Googa John Allen gave me a heads-up on some changes that are coming, or in many cases, already here.  Here is a quick overview.  Less obvious, but something any Analytics user needs to be aware of, urchin is being replaced.  There is a long transition period, but some day, you'll have to update code on your site.  The migration guide is here.

The Other Dolan

Idolan Richard Dolan, John's brother, another part of the Viant team, has started a blog.  I'm counting on him doing more technical stuff, but I like his non-tech side too.

(and just ignore all that stuff that starts with things like "Tony told me to...")

Google as my Business Card?

Jim Turner had a recent post about people giving up on business cards and instead just saying "Google me."  Huh?  Well, sure, that will work for some people, but that seems a bit far fetched for a lot of us.  Well...I gave it a quick try:

Terry Storch: Yup - top response by Google.  OK, that one didn't really surprise me.  A unique enough name, and certainly "everybody" has a link to Terry's blog.

Next try, Jason Powell: Wow, he got the top response from Google as well!

OK, how about John Dolan: Nope, not even close.  (although john dolan viant give a pretty good return)  But...John wasn't a blogger until just a few days ago.  Wonder how much this will change in the next 30 days.

Others.  Kem MeyerEd Buford.  Each of them also comes out at the top!  I guess those Granger folks now how to get search engine ranking.  Clif Guy.  Again, right at the top!  Stuart CowenBrian Glass. Trace Pupke.  Once again, each one is right at the top!

Let's take this a different direction.  Nearly everyone having anything to do with Church IT knows of Eric Busby and Mike Gold.  They neither one have regular blogs (at least not IT blogs), and they each missed the top spot from Google.  Actually, they missed significantly!

Pretty interesting.  I'm sure there are many others, but you get the point.  Hey, wait, what about me?  Well...my chances are pretty slim since there's that "Dr. Doom" Tony Dye out there who is pretty well known, especially in the U.K.  But, maybe I'll show up in the first page or two.

Oh my!  A Google search for just plain old tony dye pops me up right at the top. How can that be?  I'm flabbergasted!

Subtle

Sometimes it's not what's said directly that's important:

Name: John Dolan
URL:
http://johnadolan.typepad.com

Great, just what the world needs, another blogger :) (Note, I'm not referring to Eric)

Welcome to the blogosphere, John.

Web Browsing vs. RSS Access

According to TypePad's statistics, and somewhat validated by Google Analytics, more people look at my blog via regular web browsing than via the RSS feed.  That's surprising!  (not wrong, just surprising)  So, I'm curious.  If you're not using a feed reader, I'm wondering, why not?
