This week sure has started out "interestingly." Yesterday we had the firewall disaster, then the heroic solution. Today, my wife has a holiday from teaching, so I decided to take a vacation day to join her. Very uncharacteristic for me, I didn't do my usual early morning network checks. After all, I'm on vacation!
About 8:40, my cell phone rings and it's Gail. Please don't misunderstand, I like Gail a lot, but somehow an 8:40 call from her on my vacation day wasn't something I was looking forward to. Rightfully so! After the usual pleasantries (Gail is a networker -- she's always pleasant) she used an interesting phrase: "people are asking when Outlook will be back..." Back? Where did Outlook go? Clearly there's something more to this story. I made a quick connection (VPN is working great through the Endian) and did some checking. Certainly not an Internet connection issue, must be something internal. Sure enough, my off-line Outlook connection wouldn't sync. Ping of the Exchange server fails. Great, a failed Exchange server. This is NOT what I want to hear while I'm on vacation.
Long story short, all is fine again. For some strange reason, Exchange didn't properly reboot after a WSUS update was applied. It just needed a bit of attention (pressing the power switch a couple of times) to get things up and running again.
I think I'll go out to eat with my wife instead of looking at any of this technology stuff again...
